Cytology or Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Test?

Although they are often confused, they are not the same test and each provides different information:

🔬 Cytology analyses the cells of the cervix to identify if there are already any alterations or lesions.

🦠 The HPV test detects the presence of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and whether it is of high oncogenic risk, even before changes in the cells appear.

👉 In other words:

✔️ The HPV test detects the infection by the virus.

✔️ Cytology detects the alterations that the virus may have caused in the cells. detecta las alteraciones que ese virus puede haber producido en las células.

In some cases, when the result of the HPV test or cytology requires a more detailed study, a colposcopy. This examination allows for visualisation of the cervix with magnification and, if necessary, a biopsy can be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

That is why, they are not tests that compete with each other, but rather complement each other. Depending on your age, your history, and your risk factors, one or the other, or both, may be indicated.

In our clinic, we perform cytology, HPV tests, and colposcopy, offering a comprehensive study, an accurate diagnosis, and personalised follow-up.
